Situations That Qualify as Roofing Emergencies

Roof repairs generally shouldn’t be put off, but certain problems qualify them as emergencies and, therefore, require immediate roofing assistance. The following are a few examples of such situations:

High Winds, Storms and Hurricanes

High winds typically occur in elevated areas as well as in urban areas where wind tunnels are formed by surrounding buildings. Unlike storms or hurricanes, high winds can occur without warning, which makes them hard to anticipate. Another less obvious sign of wind damage is the presence of horizontal lines or cracks right below the part where the shingles overlap. It indicates that the shingles were forcibly tugged by the wind. This may not be as visible on dark-colored roofs, which means you may need to use binoculars on a clear day to see it.

The roof edges are the parts that are most vulnerable to wind damage. If the first row of shingles isn’t lying flat against the drip edge, then your roof has already sustained wind damage. Today’s roofing manufacturers offer roofing systems that have reinforced roof edges. For example, GAF’s Lifetime Roofing System features starter strip shingles that come in rolls, and it is installed using both roofing nails and a powerful adhesive. This is a feature that you should look for if you’re buying a new roof.

Water Intrusion

Water intrusion is more than just leaking rainwater. In fact, leaks indicate the later stages of water intrusion. Right after a storm, make it a point to check the inside your attic and look for signs like water stains on the rafters and roof deck. If water has made contact with the attic insulation, you’ll see clumps of the insulating material.

Water intrusion should be addressed immediately because the water doesn’t readily evaporate and may cause the wood in the attic to become spongy. Over time, this could lead to a crooked roofline, if not a total collapse. These issues should be treated as emergencies as the sooner you get your roof fixed, the better your home is prepared. Preventive repairs will also cost a lot less.
