How to Hang Holiday Lights Without Damaging Your Roof

It’s very nice to be in a neighborhood that’s decked out in holiday lights. But you need to make sure that you’re not damaging your roof in the process.

Plan Ahead

After deciding which lights to put where measure your roof to know how many light strings you’ll need. You’ll need to use a ladder so learn about ladder safety before you start. You can also estimate the size of your roof and buy more lights than you need. Beware that having too many lights plugged into an outlet can be a safety hazard. If you are not sure about electrical safety, consult an electrician.

Prepare Your Tools

Always make it a point to have the right tools handy. Turn on your lights for an hour or so to check for damage or burnt-out bulbs. Prepare your roof light clips, extension cords, tape to secure the cords and sturdy shoes. This will make the decorating process a lot easier.

Hang Your Lights

Before climbing the ladder, attach the first few clips to the bulb or cord. Start from the part of the roof closest to the outlet. Attach the clips to the gutters with one hand, always keeping contact with the ladder. Keep the clips close to make the line taut and straight. Work your way along the roof without shifting your center of gravity off the ladder. Move the ladder as often as needed, but be wary of damaging the siding.

Add clips to every string only when you’re on solid ground so you can work with both hands. On a roof edge without gutters like a gable edge, attach the clips to the drip edge or shingle. Never puncture any part of the roof with staples or nails. If you need to reach higher, use a taller ladder, a light-hanging pole or a bucket lift. Never stand or walk on the roof.
