3 Things You Should Do Immediately After a Hailstorm

For some parts of the country, hailstorms are simply a fact of life. While most of them are minor, sometimes a hailstorm can be so severe that it can cause catastrophic damage to your roofing system. In fact, according to the National Weather Service, hailstorms cause about $1 billion in damage to properties each year. Here are the three things you should do whenever a particularly bad hailstorm occurs in your area.

1. Document Everything

When it is safe to go outside, be sure to do a quick inspection around your property to check for any signs of damage. Take as many photos as you can, and try to record everything including the date and time of the hailstorm. Having a detailed record of everything, including the size of the hailstones, will help you later on during the insurance claims process.

2. Call Your Local Roofing Contractor

Once you do your initial check, now is the time to call in your trusted local roofing contractor. An experienced roofer will be able to see signs of damage that a typical homeowner might miss. This service should be free of charge so avoid companies that charge a fee for a storm damage inspection.

3. Contact Your Insurance Company

Once your records are complete, and a roofer has done a preliminary inspection, now is the time to reach out to your insurance company. Once you have filed your claim, your insurance provider will send an adjuster to your home to assess the severity of the damage. During this process, it is not uncommon for the adjuster and your roofing contractor to work together.
