Common Roofing Problems in Winter and How to Solve Them

Minneapolis homeowners are no stranger to the many dangers winter can bring to their roofing systems. Heavy snows, hailstorm damage and even the increased humidity levels inside houses can all pose some very unique challenges to even the sturdiest roofs.

While it’s impossible to stop winter from coming, there are ways to prepare your roof for the rough season ahead. Sometimes, knowing what to expect is enough to keep your roof safe against the elements.

Ice Dams

If you notice ice dams forming on your roof, contact your local roofing contractors right away. When the heat from your home melts the snow at the top of the roof, the melted snow falls down into gutters. Unfortunately, in extremely cold weather, the melted snow can refreeze even before it’s drained from the roof, forming a thick wall of ice right at the edge of your roof. This is known as an ice dam and can be a serious problem if left unchecked.

Moisture in the Attic

The warm moist air that keeps your family comfortable indoors can also be harmful when it stays inside your attic. Up there, the air can come into contact with the cold underside of the roof and condense into liquid water. This water poses a lot of risks to the mostly wooden joists and rafters that hold the structure of the roof in place. Ventilate your attic to avoid this common problem.

Sagging and Structural Damage

Snow and ice can add a lot of weight to your roof, which could then lead to sagging. Make sure your roofer inspects your roof before the season begins to ensure that your roof is in good shape. Sagging problems can jeopardize your whole roof so keep an eye out for any visible signs of physical deformation.
