A Guide to Spotting Hail Damage on Roofs

A Guide to Spotting Hail Damage on Roofs

Hailstorms are still possible in hot summer conditions, which is why you need to know how they can affect your roof. Krech Exteriors, one of the top roofing repair contractors in the state, elaborates more on the impact of hail on your asphalt roof below.

Bald Patches

The extent of hail damage depends on the size of the hailstones. Small hailstones are usually big enough to dislodge quite a few granules, creating bald patches on your roof.

At first, there are no cracks on the shingles. But it’s only a matter of time until they start to appear. These granules protect your roof from ultraviolet (UV) rays, and, without them, the exposed parts of your roof will break down soon enough.

If you find granules in your gutters or notice bald patches on your roof, have a roofing contractor replace your shingles right away. It would be better to have the shingles replaced before they can let in moisture and cause further problems for your roof.

Hail Hits

Moderately sized hailstones, on the other hand, can leave behind depressions on your roof, which contractors call hail hits. The areas the hailstones hit are soft and will eventually turn into an opening for water to infiltrate your roof substrate.

Cracked or Loose Shingles

Large hailstones are big enough to crack shingles and even knock off one or two. There’s a risk that strong winds may dislodge these completely.

Damaged Fiberglass Mat

Only the largest hailstones can directly damage the fiberglass base of asphalt shingles. This will almost certainly result in water infiltrating the underlying roof layers.

Roof Inspections

After an extreme weather event, regardless of how durable your roof is, there’s a high chance that it suffered some form of damage. As such, it’s important that you have a roofing contractor inspect it for signs of damage. Just make sure they have extensive experience in the industry; it takes a trained eye to spot all the signs of damage.

Krech Exteriors has more than three decades’ worth of experience in the industry and offers a wide range of roofing services, including roof inspections. To request an estimate, call us at (651) 968-8888, or fill out this form. We serve homeowners in St Paul.
