How to Clean Fiber Cement Siding

How to Clean Fiber Cement Siding

Your home’s siding can dramatically enhance the curb appeal of your home. When it is not yet time to replace your siding, you can give it a thorough clean to maintain its beauty. Different types of siding materials require different types of maintenance. For example, if you have fiber cement siding in your home, cleaning is relatively easy. But it’s important to know how to clean all types of available siding.

Removing Dirt From Your Siding

Dust and dirt picked up by the wind can cling to the siding of your home. Use a soft cloth or a soft brush and a garden hose.

Brush the siding’s surface, or wipe the surface with a wet cloth in a side to side motion, and then rinse with clean water. Work from top to bottom to prevent streaking or dripping on the already cleaned area.

Removing Oil, Grease and Other Organic Contaminants

Use a soft cloth dipped in soapy water. Clean the stained area, and rinse the cloth frequently. Use a garden hose to thoroughly rinse the siding. Make sure that no soap or cleaner residue is left to dry on the siding.

Removing Mold and Mildew

Use a mold and mildew cleaner, and strictly follow the manufacturer’s directions. You can use a soft cloth or sponge to apply the cleaner. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose when done.

Pro tip: Never use a hard metal brush or abrasive sponge to clean your fiber cement siding. Likewise, do not use a pressure hose to rinse your siding.
