How to Secure Your Home During a Renovation

Renovation projects can get chaotic. And, with people constantly entering and exiting your home, you’ll find it hard to keep an eye on all your belongings. There’s always a risk some might be misplaced or even go missing. Here are some tips on protecting your home and belongings during renovations.

Vet Your Contractor

No amount of security measures will keep your home safe if the people entering it are not trustworthy. That’s why you should always vet a contractor before hiring one. However, not all homeowners have the time for such a time-consuming task. If you’re short on time, we recommend taking the following steps:

  1. Ask for referrals from family and friends – It would be better if your contractor is based in your area.

  2. Check the contractor’s employment process –  You naturally want to make sure the contractor and their employees are trustworthy.

  3. See if the contractor is accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) – The BBB rates contractors based on their adherence to ethical business practices and their response to customer complaints.

Secure Your Valuables

Of course, you need to keep all of your valuables, e.g., devices, jewelry and money, in a safe or a room that can’t be easily accessed. However, it’d be a good idea to keep an eye on the following fixtures and construction materials as well:

  1. Brass fixtures and plumbing fittings

  2. High-end kitchen appliances

  3. Copper wire and pipes

Observing these precautions can help reduce the risk of theft during the project. Keep in mind that construction errors can also lead to financial loss. Whether you need to install a new roofing system or renovate your entire home, always make sure your contractor has enough experience.
