Efflorescence is common with most types of concrete, stucco and masonry. These materials are very porous and will absorb any moisture in which they come into contact. This has been a problem for fiber cement siding manufacturers for many years. Unlike fiber cement, engineered wood siding will not effloresce.
Efflorescence
Efflorescence is a chemical action that discolors stucco, concrete and fiber cement products. These products can contain salts and other minerals. Fiber cement can absorb moisture if not well covered before installation. Excess moisture can also penetrate the backside of the substrate. The water from such moisture dissolves salts inside the fiber cement.
How It Forms
This problem usually happens when siding gets heated by the sun. Moisture leaches to the surface and evaporates, leaving behind crusty, white salt deposits. Although harmless to fiber cement siding, they are ugly and can be difficult to remove.
Labor-Intensive Removal
Removal of efflorescence is time-consuming and labor-intensive. Try pressure-washing or applying an acid wash to the surface. When using acid products, repeating the process may be necessary for full removal. With water, the siding can reabsorb the salts reappearing later as more efflorescence.
