Hail Damage on Your Roof: Does Hail Size Matter?

Hail Damage on Your Roof: Does Hail Size Matter?

Size is one of the factors that determine the extent of hail damage on roofing systems. While larger hailstones pack a punch and leave punctures and cracks, those that are smaller than an inch can be just as destructive.

Three-Quarter-Inch Hail

The smallest hailstone that can be measured following a storm can still be damaging, especially when you take wind speeds into account. It is enough to damage window screens, metal fascia and vinyl siding. It can even dislodge asphalt shingle granules and leave dents on gutters and downspouts. However, it can be difficult for homeowners to identify the damage associated with hail that is less than an inch small.

One-Inch Hail

Hailstones measuring an inch can inflict significant damage to siding, gutters and fascia. It can also leave bruises on the exposed roof underlayment. Wind speeds determine how severe the damage can be, which is similar to that of damage caused by smaller sizes of hail. An incremental increase in hail size brings about extensive property damage. A 1 ¼ inch size hailstone, for instance, can simply fall from the sky without any accompanying wind and still inflict severe damage.

Two-Inch Hail

Hail this size can penetrate through softer materials and components like ridge caps or plastic vents. If accompanied by wind, it can tear your home exteriors, shatter window glass and cause damage to metal fixtures. If you see some of it lying around your yard after a hailstorm, consider getting in touch with your roofing contractor right away to assess the damage.
