Roofing Style Spotlight: Skillion Roof

Skillion roofs, also known as shed roofs, are single-sloped roofs that have since become a staple of modern architectural styles. Krech Exteriors takes a closer look at this simple yet effective roofing style.

Key Characteristics of Skillion Roofs

The single slope that makes up a skillion roof is based on the type used on sheds and similar structures. The accompanying gutter system is simpler, with only one direction for the rainwater to go. Certain home designs make use of two skillion roofs at different elevations, which ensure efficient rainwater shedding regardless of wind direction.

Thanks to their unconventional shape, skillion roofs typically do not require attic spaces, which means all roofing insulation has to be installed on the roof deck itself. The extra wall space at the top provides additional space for windows that allow for natural lighting, such as picture windows. High ceilings also allow for modern interior elements like lofts.

Roofing Material

Skillion roofs need to be able to quickly shed high volumes of rainwater, so they need a smooth outer surface. This makes metal the ideal roofing material for skillion roofs. Standing seam metal roofing, in particular, is designed to handle increased loads. When combined with high-capacity gutters, a skillion roof can handle all the rain and snow nature throws at it.

Another reason why metal is ideal for skillion roofs is its energy efficiency. Since homes with skillion roofs do not have attic spaces, any amount of heat that makes it past the roof will negatively affect indoor cooling requirements. This means the air conditioning system will have to consume more energy to make up for the temperature difference. This results in an increase in energy consumption, leading to costlier utility bills. A metal roof can have reflective coatings applied to it, which reflect the heat from the sun and minimizes heat absorption. Copper roofs likewise have the same effect, but they do not require any coating as they’re naturally reflective.
