Asphalt Shingle Cracks vs. Splits: What’s the Difference?

Asphalt Shingle Cracks vs. Splits: What’s the Difference?

When it comes to asphalt shingle roof damage, the terms “cracks” and “splits” often mean the same thing. However, there’s a difference between the two. Cracking occurs on the shingle surface while splitting refers to the roofing material getting fractured. Both issues, when not addressed, can expose your roof’s underlayment and decking to moisture damage.

Here’s how cracks and splits happen.

Asphalt Shingle Cracks

The asphalt mix that is applied to the shingles during the manufacturing process contains volatiles. These particular components give asphalt shingles flexibility and waterproofing capabilities. However, the roofing material loses volatiles over time, causing the roofing material to dry, shrink and crack.

Long-term exposure to heat expedites the process, resulting in random cracks on the surface called craze-cracking. Cracks are usually an indication of aging, but if the roofing system is fairly new, it means that the quality of the asphalt shingles used during installation was subpar.

Asphalt Shingle Splits

Exposure to the sun’s heat causes asphalt shingles to expand. They contract as temperatures go down at nighttime. Thermal stress happens because of this continuous cycle, resulting in shingle splitting. Another reason why this issue happens involves the adhesive used to secure the shingles in place. The adhesion of the shingles onto the underlayment and decking might be too strong that they become less resistant to wind shear. Splits and tears may form on the shingles as soon as they’re exposed to high winds.
