Don’t Believe These Common Tile Roofing Myths

Don’t Believe These Common Tile Roofing Myths

Despite being one of the oldest roofing systems known to man, myths about tile roofing still exist. In today’s blog, Krech Exteriors debunks three of the most pervasive tile roofing myths.

MYTH: Tile Roofs Absorb Water, Which Makes Them Leak

This myth may have been prompted by the fact that clay is inherently porous and, therefore, will absorb moisture on contact. Clay tiles, on the other hand, are different. Traditional clay tiles are baked in high heat. The longer the tile stays in the oven, the better waterproofing it has. Low-quality tile tends to absorb more water, but not to the point where it turns soft.

Tiles need to dry completely in order to prevent algae growth. To minimize moisture intrusion, choose quality fired clay tile. Some manufacturers also sell coated tiles. This coating can become worn in time, but it can be reapplied. The important question is, does it lead to leaks? The answer: it doesn’t. Uncoated clay or concrete tiles do absorb moisture, but it doesn’t lead to leaks unless the tile already has cracks.

MYTH: Tile Roofs Crack On Impact

This entirely depends on the quality of the tile used on the roof. A reputable roofing contractor should supply thick roofing tiles, which are can withstand impact from hailstones and debris as well as foot traffic. Curved tile can also withstand more pressure compared to a flat tile of similar mass, making a tile roof inherently resistant to pressure. Proper installation techniques also help ensure even weight distribution.

MYTH: Tile Roofs Tend to Overheat

Every type of roofing material absorbs heat. The question is this: does it allow heat to pass through into the attic? Roofing tiles are inherently insulated, which mean only a small amount of radiated heat actually makes it to the roof deck. With proper attic insulation, heat transfer is minimized. This is also ideal during winter as it could prevent ice dam formation.
