Tips to Help You Boost Your Home’s Natural Ventilation

When living in your home, proper ventilation is one of the things that you need to keep in mind. This is because ventilation can easily dictate how comfortable your home is as well as how pure your indoor air quality can be. With that in mind, you can consider a few methods that can improve the natural ventilation of your home.

Position Openings for Cross Ventilation

When you’re having new windows installed in your new home, be sure to position their openings for cross ventilation. Remember: wind is sucked towards areas of lower air pressure, and, as such, openings should be placed to draw breezes through your home. To position window openings for cross ventilation, place them on two sides of the room opposite one another. That way, there’ll be multiple wind-flow paths into your home that encourages natural breezes to enter, especially during the summer months.

Increase the Window Height

On the other hand, if you’re installing new windows in your home, you can improve the building’s natural ventilation by installing a window that’s at least 3.6 feet high. If that’s not enough for you, you can increase the window’s height for a bit more. By doing so, you can help indoor air movement and reduce the heat load on your ceilings.

Install Wind/Air Deflectors

Alternatively, you can also consider installing wind/air deflectors in your overhangs, louvers or slats if you’re looking for ways to improve your home’s natural ventilation. This is because these deflectors can redirect air flow into your home, allowing you to improve its indoor air quality.

Add Transitional Spaces

If you’re having your home built from scratch, you can improve its natural ventilation and encourage better airflow by adding transitional spaces into its architecture. These transitional spaces include courts, balconies and atriums.
