Why Are There Ripples in Your Roof Shingles?

why are there ripples in your roof shingles

Keeping an eye on your roof is integral to its performance and longevity. If you notice wavy or rippled asphalt shingles, it is an indication of a hidden issue that requires immediate attention. It can happen in both old and new roofs, but what’s exactly causing it?

Re-Roofing

Also known as a roof overlay, it is a method of roof installation where the new roofing shingles are installed on top of the old one. It is usually done in lieu of a complete tear-off as a way to save on costs. However, the fact that the old roof is still intact means that there’s no way of telling whether the layers beneath it have issues that need to be addressed. Eventually, the new roof will suffer issues, including rippled shingles and a lack of attic ventilation.

Improper Roof Deck Installation

Your roofing system’s decking or sheathing covers the rafters and trusses, and provides support to the remaining layers of your roof, including your underlayment and shingles. When installed without any gaps to accommodate its expansion and contraction, it can lead to your roof looking wavy or rippled. The same thing can happen if the roof itself doesn’t have an underlayment installed.

Wet Underlayment

A typical residential roof has a deck, followed by the underlayment and then the shingles. The middle layer is a waterproof material that serves as a secondary barrier against moisture intrusion. During installation, roofers make sure that the underlayment is dry before placing the new shingles. If not, it will wrinkle, causing the shingles to appear rippled or wavy.
